Interview with Amanda Walker
Today we were fortunate enough to hear the inside scoop from Amanda, creator of The Golden Girl Diary. Amanda brings a wealth of knowledge to the fashion industry with her years of experience in retail, buying, as well as a degree in fashion merchandising and management.
Lust Have: What inspired you to start blogging?
Amanda: I was actually pushed to start my blog by family, friends, and my husband. I have always had such a passion for anything fashion related from a very young age. I worked at retail at age 15 and then decided to study Fashion in college too! It was my time during my retail experience that I knew I had found what I truly loved! After college, I was working a typical 9-5 job that was not fashion related, that made me realize how unhappy I was. My husband basically pushed me to start it and I haven't looked back since!
LH: In one sentence, how would you describe the purpose of your blog to a potential new follower?
A: The Golden Girl Diary is a destination for women who want to feel inspired and beautiful in their own skin.
LH: Who is your number one fashion inspiration and why?
A: I love Rachel Parcell of Pink Peonies, but my favorite is Katey McFarlan of Chronicles of Frivolity. If I'm ever in a wardrobe funk, I always look to one of them for some outfit inspo.
LH: What are some of your current style obsessions?
A: I've always been an accessory lover, so I'm currently loving arm parties. I am living in camo and peplum tops too! The camo tee paired with a bold statement necklace is my go-to. I also love the velvet trend, although I haven't dove into as much as I would like to....yet.
LH: What are your predictions for the next big style trend?
A: It seems like the 90's are making a run for today's trends, so I would suggest some trends from that era to continue to make their way into today's fashion.
LH: Tell us about a typical day working on your blog.
A: Phew, this is exhausting just thinking about it. I usually start work around 8:30AM and proof read any post that is going live. I also check my inbox for any urgent messages during this time. I usually publish posts around 9-10AM. So during that time, I'm sharing my posts on various social media platforms and sending some love to other bloggers posts as well. Because I believe it is important to support other bloggers in this industry as we're all so different. If it's a day that I won't be shooting I'll usually spend the day editing photos from a previous shoot and uploading to my blog. I also spend the afternoons creating spreadsheets with potential brands to collaborate with. A lot of my time is spent on design tools, like photoshop or Illustrator because I'm always tweaking my media kit that I send to brands. On days that I shoot, I work until 1PM in the office and then begin styling outfit for that days photoshoot. Typically, I shoot 3-5 outfits per shoot. I prefer the evening sunlight, so I shoot around 3:30/4PMish. If I'm not working away on my laptop, I'm probably on my phone. I try to make a schedule for that as well because I don't like to sit in front of devices all day long. Blogging is certainly a lot more work than I thought it would be, but it's certainly worth it! Especially since I enjoy what I am writing about so much.
LH: What changes have you noticed in your life after starting your blog?
A: Aside from blog success, I've noticed that I've started to be more accepting and understanding of others. From blogging, I think I've really started to realize that every persons situation is different and you never know what someone else is going through. It seems like a strange thing to realize from blogging, but I've met so many amazing people along the way and you would never know it unless you took the time to get to know them better. Also, I definitely enjoy my work WAY more than my previous job. So it's safe to say that I feel so much happier overall.
LH: Who is your favorite photographer for your shoots?
A: My husband! He's so much fun to shoot with and it's something that we both enjoy doing together.
LH: What is your next big milestone for your digital diary?
A: My next milestone definitely has to do with numbers and analytics. I want to reach a certain amount of subscribers on my e-mail list!
LH: What is the toughest lesson you have learned so far from the world of fashion blogging?
A: Hm, that's a tough question but I guess it'd have to be that not everyone is going to like you. There will be haters and negativity surrounding you when you are putting yourself out there on social media. So some people are bound to not like you or to have nasty things to say. I would say I struggle with letting the negative comments go, but it's something that I'm aware of and working on.
